The Graduating Geek's Guide to High Finance

Disclaimer & Philosophy

Some of the articles on this blog include analysis of stocks and investment vehicles. At some point I may find a lawyer to draw up a bunch of legal language, but for now I’ll stick with plain English, under the assumption that even a lawyer might be able to understand it.

Do NOT make investment choices based on anything I say. If you do, I’m not responsible in any way, shape or form.

Do not make any financial decision based on anything I say. The options I bring up may not be best or even applicable for your situation.

I’m not a financial advisor. I’m not your financial advisor. This site is a learning tool, and with it you can get a sense of my own thought processes. But the only person who should be following the advice presented here is me (and hopefully I’ll have the confidence to do so).

Some of the information on this site is likely to be inaccurate or incorrect. I’m not a CPA, and I am quite confident that I will miss things or misunderstand things when reading financial statements. Like many, I learn from mistakes. Unlike many, I’m not afraid to make mistakes in order to learn. Nor am I afraid to admit them.

When I review a company, generally speaking I will not go into detail on if and how I have acted on that information. In many cases I will have already acted before posting the review (since it takes time to write things up, and once I find an opportunity I will likely act on it quickly). While not an expert, I am a moderately sophisticated investor and will make use of techniques including trading in options and short sales. Unlike financial media sites that are very careful to disclose ownership of stocks they are reporting on, here you can and should assume that I will take some sort of position on the stocks I discuss. This is, after all, a personal finance site (me being the person), and not an objective media site.

So much for disclaimers, but on the good side, I have some claimers as well (yes, I know it’s not a word, but you know what I mean).

I do not work for a financial service firm. So I have no incentive to sell you anything.

This site does use Google adwords, but I neither care nor control what ads end up appearing on the site – so it can’t impact what I write about. In cases where I have control over the advertising, I’ll choose the ads based on what I write, not the other way around. But the appearance of an ad on this site does not imply I recommend the product, unless I say otherwise.
Bottom line: Sometimes I’ll be right. Sometimes wrong. But you’ll always get my honest viewpoint.

And I’m old fashioned enough to believe that’s worth something.
